5 Health Apps with Free Options for Everyday Wellness
Small, repeatable habits can make looking after yourself feel more manageable. Health apps can help you record activity, notice patterns and set reminders. They are optional tools, not a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a measure of your worth.
App information reviewed: 8 October 2026. The five options below are free to use or offer a free tier. A free download is not the same as free ongoing access. Features, regional availability and subscription terms can change, so check your South African app-store listing and the provider’s current terms before installing.
1. My Possible Self: self-care tools
My Possible Self offers free access to mental-wellbeing tools and content developed with Priory Healthcare using cognitive behavioural therapy principles. Its exercises can provide a starting point for reflecting on feelings and everyday coping habits. Check the provider’s links for the app or web option available to you.
Self-help content does not guarantee recovery within a fixed number of weeks and is not a substitute for individual assessment or therapy. Seek professional advice if anxiety, low mood or sleep difficulties persist or interfere with daily life.
2. Medito: guided relaxation and mindfulness
Medito is a free app offering guided meditations, breathing exercises, courses and sleep audio. The foundation states that it has no advertisements, subscription paywall or required account. It links to Apple and Android downloads.
Choose practices that suit your preferences, and stop an exercise if it makes you feel uncomfortable. You do not need a meditation app to take a quiet break, go for a walk or keep a regular wind-down routine.
3. Sleep Cycle: a free tier with important trial terms
Sleep Cycle’s free tier includes sleep analysis, a nightly graph and an alarm designed to time waking within a selected window. More detailed statistics and several other features require Premium.
Check before signing up: its free-access instructions say to start a trial, cancel during the trial period and then retain the free features when it ends. A trial can lead to a paid subscription if you do not cancel in time. Read the checkout terms and cancellation instructions for your device.
Treat sleep scores and estimated sleep stages as trends, not medical measurements or proof that you slept well or badly. An alarm cannot guarantee waking only during light sleep. Discuss persistent insomnia, loud snoring with breathing pauses or excessive daytime sleepiness with a healthcare professional.
4. Apple Health: a place for iPhone health records
The Health app on iPhone brings together recorded information and can count steps and walking or running distance using the phone. You can also enter information manually or connect compatible apps and devices. Using the Health app itself does not require an Apple Fitness+ subscription.
Some measurements need a compatible wearable or separate device, which may cost extra. A phone’s ability to store blood pressure or glucose readings does not mean it can measure them on its own.
5. Samsung Health: activity tracking on compatible Android phones
Samsung Health is free to download through Google Play or Galaxy Store. Samsung’s South African page describes activity tracking and step counting on compatible Android phones. Device and operating-system requirements apply; the app is not automatically installed on every Android phone.
Start with a simple feature such as recording walks. Additional measurements may need compatible hardware, and some services vary by device and country. General wellness tracking is not the same as medical monitoring.
What changed about Lark and Headspace?
An earlier version of this article included both as free options. Lark currently offers its programmes through participating insurers and employers, subject to eligibility; free access for a South African reader should not be assumed. Headspace offers a trial of its library, with a subscription needed for continued library access. A limited trial is not a permanently free app.
Choose an app that supports you
- Pick one purpose: try a walking log, a self-care exercise or a sleep diary before adding more tools.
- Check costs: read trial expiry, automatic renewal and cancellation terms. Mobile data and optional devices can also cost money.
- Protect private information: review permissions, sharing settings and account-deletion options. Only connect services you want to use.
- Keep tracking in perspective: pause if scores or targets increase anxiety, compulsive exercise or worries about food and weight.
- Use appropriate care: do not change medicines or ignore symptoms because of an app result. These apps are not emergency services; seek urgent local medical help if you are in immediate danger.
Healthy routines beyond your screen
Regular meals, enjoyable movement, sleep routines and supportive relationships remain useful foundations. For practical reading, explore our guide to food cravings and healthy alternatives.
Supplements are optional and should suit an individual need; using a wellness app does not mean you need them. Ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional about suitability and interactions, especially if you take medicines, are pregnant or are choosing products for a child. Product information for Moringa Plus, Organa-Vit, Organamin, Rewind, Zeolite and Slimming Aid is available through the Nordens shop. These products should not be presented as treatments for anxiety, hypertension or sleep disorders, or as guaranteed weight-loss solutions.
Organamin contains Lithothamnium Calcareum (red algae). Rewind’s formulation contains laboratory-confirmed nanoparticle sized clinoptilolite. Rewind is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. Rewind’s liquid spray formulation is produced through a specialised technical manufacturing process; it is not conventional clinoptilolite powder simply mixed with water. Particle size alone does not establish a clinical benefit.
Choose one manageable habit and a tool that makes it easier to keep. Progress does not require a paid subscription or perfect daily scores.
