Depression vs Anxiety: Symptoms and Support

When everyday pressures build up, life can feel more like surviving than thriving. Depression and anxiety deserve care and understanding. Recognising possible symptoms can help you start a conversation with a healthcare professional, but a checklist cannot diagnose either condition.

How are depression and anxiety different?

Depression often involves persistent low mood or losing interest in activities you normally enjoy. Anxiety disorders involve fear or worry that is difficult to manage and disrupts daily life. They can occur together, and both can affect sleep, energy and concentration. Stressful events may contribute, but neither condition has one simple cause.

Possible signs of depression

  • Feeling persistently low, empty, hopeless, guilty or worthless.
  • Losing interest or pleasure in familiar activities.
  • Changes in sleep, appetite or energy.
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions.
  • Irritability, withdrawal, or unexplained physical discomfort.
  • Thoughts of death or suicide, which need urgent support.

Major depression usually involves symptoms on most days for at least two weeks, with effects on daily functioning. You do not need to wait two weeks to ask for help. A clinician can assess other possible contributors, including medicines and medical conditions such as thyroid disorders.

Possible signs of an anxiety disorder

Occasional worry is normal. An anxiety disorder is more persistent or intense and may interfere with work, school, relationships or ordinary activities. Possible signs include:

  • Worry that feels difficult to control, or avoiding situations because of fear.
  • Restlessness, irritability or feeling constantly on edge.
  • Muscle tension, sweating, stomach discomfort or a racing heart.
  • Sleep difficulties, tiredness or trouble concentrating.

There are different anxiety disorders, and some involve panic attacks. Physical symptoms can have other causes: do not assume new chest pain, fainting or severe breathing difficulty is anxiety. Seek urgent medical assessment.

Getting the right help

Speak to your GP, a psychologist or another qualified mental-health professional when symptoms persist, worsen or disrupt your life. Treatment can include talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), prescribed medication, or a combination suited to your needs. Do not stop or change prescribed treatment without your prescriber’s advice.

If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, seek urgent help from a healthcare professional. If you may act on those thoughts or cannot stay safe, go to the nearest emergency department or contact emergency services now. Ask someone you trust to stay with you while help is arranged.

Everyday habits that can support your wellbeing

Small, manageable steps can complement professional care. They are not guaranteed treatments, and struggling to follow a routine is not a personal failure.

  • Move in a way you can manage. A short walk is a reasonable start. Build up gradually around your abilities and health needs.
  • Make room for rest. Try a consistent sleep routine and a quieter wind-down period.
  • Eat regularly. Aim for varied meals rather than restrictive rules or promises that cutting out one food will cure your mood.
  • Notice alcohol and caffeine. Consider how they affect your sleep and anxiety, and discuss concerns with your clinician.
  • Try a calming activity. Gentle breathing, music, a hobby or time with a pet may feel comforting. Stop an exercise if it makes you feel worse.
  • Stay connected. Tell a trusted person how you are doing. Sharing a laugh can be welcome, but you do not have to force yourself to feel cheerful.
  • Make tasks smaller. Choose one manageable step and ask for practical help when you need it.

Supplements: informed choices alongside appropriate care

A supplement should not replace assessment or treatment for depression or an anxiety disorder. Discuss supplements with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take medication. Correcting an identified nutritional deficiency is different from claiming that a supplement treats a mental-health condition.

  • Rewind: Rewind’s formulation contains laboratory-confirmed nanoparticle sized clinoptilolite. Rewind is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. Its liquid spray formulation is made through a specialised technical process; it is not conventional clinoptilolite powder mixed with water. Particle size alone does not demonstrate a mental-health benefit.
  • Organamin: contains Lithothamnium Calcareum, a mineral-rich red algae ingredient. Nutritional information about this ingredient does not establish that Organamin treats depression, anxiety, insomnia or stomach ulcers.
  • Attention Max and vitamin/mineral products: should be considered according to their labelled ingredients, directions and suitability. This article does not recommend them as mental-health treatments.

You deserve support, even on days when taking the next step feels difficult. Recovery and symptom management can take time, and help is available.
